Today's lesson was all about character design. We sources a number of example from past and present cartoons and de-constructed them, then we looked at them in more detail, stance, body language, characteristics and features. It was then that the group began to understand what they required of their animation characters.
The group loved this lesson, there was lots of interaction and everyone had their own input and suggestions.
Above are some images we used, and how the children described them;
Batman
Strong, big body, hero, scary, powerful.
"How did the animator achieve this?"
Camera angle, square face, large upper body, wind blowing, costume.
The children were more than aware of who this character is but only when we looked at him in greater detail did we understand why we respect him and what screams super hero about him.
Dopey
silly, daft, simple, scruffy, cute.
"How did the animator achieve this?"
over size clothing, big eyes, bald head, big ears, dorky smile
Dopey is a character the children all love and when i showcased him he was an instant hit. this was a good image to use at there are lots of good reference point to use.
